The biological activity of cytokines is commonly measured by cellular proliferation of primary cell cultures or in vitro adapted cell lines that are dependent and/or responsive to a specific growth factor. Other aspects of biological activity of cytokines include induction of further cytokine secretion, induction of killing, antiviral activity, degranulation, Cytotoxicity, chemotaxis, and promotion of colony formulation.
Akron Biotech, currently collaborating with a leading company in the assay development industry, offers over two hundred in-vitro assays to determine various biological activities. Our bioassay capability is the most comprehensive one in the US. Most of the bioassays Akron Biotech offers have become industry standards, and are based on colorimetric, fluorescent or luminescent methods. Specific cytokine bioassays are routinely performed, in addition to Proliferation, Neutralization, Cytotoxicity, Complement Dependent Cytotoxicity, Agonist and Antagonist Screening assays. Other assays, such as h-April, and VEGF-B, are under development and will be available soon.
Additional assays have been developed such as Canine, Equine, Feline, Porcine, Rhesus, Macaque and Swine derived cytokine bioassays.
